My guest today, Doug Gray, frontman, lead singer for the Marshall Tucker Band, is part of Rock & Roll legend, aristocracy, and good man, US Army vet all rolled into one.
The lineup has changed several times over the decades, at one point featuring Sarasota-Manatee resident Frankie Toler, with Gray the remaining founding member in the group.In a phone interview, Gray talked about his memories of Sarasota-Manatee, why he says he’ll never retire and the legacy of the Caldwells. Their most famous tracks include “Can’t You See,” named the top Southern rock song of all time by Ultimate Classic Rock, and the 1977 hit single “Heard It in a Love Song.”The original group included lead singer Doug Gray, lead guitarist and songwriter Toy Caldwell, who died in 1993 from cardio-respiratory failure, and his brother and bassist Tommy Caldwell, who died in a car crash in 1980. Now, they’ll visit again for a sold-out show at The Center of Anna Maria Island on Monday.Alongside The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band remains one of the pillars of Southern rock.
Plus you got some of the finest beaches down there that anybody can ever go to.What are your memories of the Toler brothers?You know, they’re both gone now, so we miss them. All the different people there have treated us so good. The (Dan and Frankie) Toler brothers, when they were in and out of our band and the Allman Brothers Band, I have memories of coming and hanging out with them for just a little bit, two or three days here and there. Do you have any favorite memories of visiting here?The fact is, we had several members that come from that area.
I feel like I’m kind of like the father figure. They get to come see us and they get to come hang out with the guys in the band. You don’t really realize how many people you’ve attracted, whether it’s 500 or whether it’s 10,000 or in Jacksonville, I think it was something like 85,000 on a rainy day, that was with us and Skynyrd.So you don’t only get to see the same people, they’ve grown up just like we have and when they grow up, their kids grow up.
We never had an argument, the original Marshall Tucker Band never had an argument. It was what was drawing us together beautifully because that whole eight, nine-year period that was the original period of Marshall Tucker Band before Tommy got killed, it was a time that taught you understanding compassion and families and relations that you can have forever as long as you treated them with respect. So when we got together, we didn’t know what the hell kind of band we had, we really didn’t.We were still young and dumb at 19 and 20 and just getting back from serving in Vietnam. Then we got to see the Allman Brothers and then I went to see Ian Anderson, I went to see all these different jazz people and I kind of was influenced by those people, as was Toy.
“Can’t You See” as well — you can’t get away from “Can’t You See,” everybody in country music. But it just sounds like somebody else should be doing this song.” Sure enough, every time you walk into a club or you walk into a bar, somebody’s doing that song. I kept putting it off and didn’t want to do it because as Toy and I talked, I said, “Man, that’s a great song, I love the lyrics and everything. And people are still using that song, they’re using these songs to put a point across.Is it true that it took a lot of convincing for you to make “Heard It in a Love Song,” which then became one of your biggest hits?Right, it did, and it was kind of like an overnight success when it did come out. It was testifying why he wrote that song and how he did it.
